Quick-look review: Asterisk 1.6
We started using Asterisk PBX several months ago. I recently moved it to a new server, configured firewall settings and connected it to our SIP peer (VOX).
The first think I look for in an application is simplicity and a simple, logical installation. If installing is problematic, I know that upgrades and maintenance is risky. I don't like risk in production systems. We standardised on CentOS for all servers and therefore it is required that it works on CentOS.
INSTALLATION
Using the yum installation, it could not be simpler and works without any issues. Being a die-hard Unix command line fan, I love configuration in the for of config files in /etc. Asterisk does not disappoint in this area either. Config is logical and not too challenging.
OPERATION
We currently use Media5 SIP client on iPhone to connect to the PBX as well as X-Lite on Mac (Mac shop). Dialing out is great and receiving calls are instantaneous.
CONCLUSION
All in all I have to say that Asterisk gets my vote. Solid, command-line, robust, on my favorite Linux operating system.
