AFP vs iSCSI
For years now, we have used iSCSI and AFP (Apple File Protocol) as NAS/SAN technologies. CentOS Linux Server and Mac/Linux clients.
I've tested/benchmarked NFS,SMP,AFP and iSCSI. NFS is slow over fast networks, but fast over slow networks. SMP is quite fast, but not ideal for Apple workstations and since we don't use Windows, it sort of doesn't make sense using it.
With iSCSI we are able to really move IO on a Gigabit dedicated network, but AFP surprised me. Transfer rates are basically as fast as iSCSI and large file copies even faster. Since AFP is a share rather than a dedicated device, it is more practical for us since we can view the content from different locations and have more freedom with backup options.
As a result, we are currently using AFP for all NAS usage and iSCSI only on Clusters. Keep in mind that all our clients are Macs.
